WUIS Special Programming: 4-hour Johnny Cash documentary

Springfield – 91-9 WUIS/89-3 WIPA Public Radio is airing four nights of biography, music, and commentary about the late Johnny Cash in November.

WUIS is airing the series, produced by Joyride Media, the week of November 7 at 7 p.m.

·Monday, November 7: Johnny Cash, How Great Thou Art

When it comes to his spiritual life, Johnny Cash showed no fear in spreading the word. We follow the complicated religious journey of Cash's life, from pious beginnings, straying from the church, betrayal of beliefs and return to the fold. Along the way, Cash wrote fascinating songs that reflect his struggle with belief and human nature.

·Tuesday, November 8: Johnny Cash, Ring of Fire

In retrospect, most people think of Johnny Cash as always being in the public eye, and always being the Man in Black. In fact, Cash's career was a turbulent one with wild ups and downs and surprises. From his start on the farm, through country stardom, drug problems, religious awakening and recent resurgence, there's never a dull moment in the life of Johnny Cash. His story gives us a glimpse of Cash the Everyman in search of his American dream.

·Wednesday, November 9: Johnny Cash, The Man in Black

"Till things are brighter, I'm the Man in Black" sang Johnny Cash. He was an American with open eyes, aware of the state of the world, and he cared deeply. Cash shared his opinions on politics without hesitation or compromise, and people listened. His influence helped open the way for artists to express their feelings and views without fear.

·Thursday, November 10:  Johnny Cash, The World Needs a Melody

One of the first country stars to write most of his own material, Johnny Cash created a songbook to rival Porter and Gershwin. We look into the craft of Cash, how he shaped his stories, told tales of the people and places around him, and influenced the songwriting and arranging of artists now.
